This account of the Kennedy assassination ("the most riveting ever," says The New York Times) is taken from Robert A. Caro's brilliant and bestselling The Passage of Power

Here is that tragic day in Dallas alive with startling details reported for the first time by the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Just as scandals that might end his career are about to break over Lyndon Johnson's head, the motorcade containing the presidential party is making its slow and triumphant way along the streets of Dallas. In Caro's breathtakingly vivid narrative, we witness the shots, the procession speeding to Parkland Memorial Hospital, the moment when Kennedy aide Lawrence O'Donnell tells Johnson "He's gone," and Johnson's iconic swearing in on Air Force One. Compelling.

Dallas November 22 1963 A Vintage Short eBook Robert A Caro

Robert Caro knows more about the life of Lyndon Johnson than anyone. This is a prelude to the last volume of his five volume biography of LBJ.
It is a wealth of information and comes within an eyelash of implying the Johnson was part of the plot to assassinate JFK. It is a detailed account of the extraordinary transformation that Johnson underwent in a very short time. From his frustration as a nonperson status in the Kennedy administration he changed his persona and even his speaking mannerisms in a flash to lead the grieving nation through the transition, with subtlety, strength and compassion. He took on the reins of power with tireless energy and succeeded in getting a whirlwind of legislation passed to cement the legacy of JFK that no one, especially John Kennedy, could have accomplished. Very informative and, as with all his books, compelling.

Dallas November 22 1963 A Vintage Short eBook Robert A Caro Reviews

I found quite interesting the opening discussion of the Bobby Baker affair that was about to blow up. Whatever you may think of JFK assassination conspiracy theories, it certainly makes you appreciate the motive LBJ may have had. Of course, lots of people may have had motivation, but I had never thought much of the LBJ angle until I read this segment...makes me inclined to read Caro's full book.
I remember that day very well. I was in 6th Grade and suddenly we were all walking home two hours early, trying to make sense of what we heard. This short story filled in details I didn't know and confirmed others. It is a look into the transformation of LBJ from VP to President in a few hours. Very well written.
Caro spent his life soul mining LBJ. This account adds credible depth to the overall picture of the assassination story, and provides an important bridge between it, and LBJ's own path to power.
It is a different perspective than the usual Kennedy assassination books. Good insight on the passage of power. I've many books on the Kennedy assassination but none as detailed as what happened in the Vice President's car. I would recommend for those who read different books about the assassination.
This excerpt gives an excellent account of the events of the Kennedy assassination from Lyndon Johnson. The events were described based on interviews with the people who were there, and the accounts of the people who were there. The story is told with Robert Caro's typical attention to detail. I think that it a valuable thing to read for the price.
First off, read Caro's The Power Broker. Utterly fantastic stuff. I love his research and writing style. The issue with this extract is it is far too short to give the subject it's due. Those who have read about the assassination will find little new and those who have not will receive little value. So read a full history or ten about that fateful day...not necessarily Passage of Power as that is part of Caro's series on Lyndon Johnson.
No person alive knows Lyndon Johnson better than does Robert A. Caro. If you want to know Johnson, you have to read the books by Mr. Caro, including "Dallas."
Others have gone into more detail than I and there is no need for me to repeat what they have written in review. But this treatment of that terrible day in Dallas in November 1963 makes one feel as though one were there, that one literally stood by LBJ as he reacted to the events in his native state and as he became president of the United States and began facing a tumultuous five-year presidency.
Judged against Americans in high power today, Lyndon Johnson looks like a giant. Robert Caro brings him to life and down to size, warts and all. Every citizen needs to know this history and this president. Read this book!
